Mel Goldstein United States Masters Swimming Mel Goldstein is Director and a Coach for the YMCA Indy SwimFit program. The program is an adult aquatic fitness program adapted for individuals who want to use aquatics as their means of exercise for a healthier lifestyle. The program has 350+ participants who make up the programs three components, triathletes, fitness swimmers, and competitive masters swimmers. The Indy SwimFit program uses 5 different facilities and has 45 practice times weekly. Additionally, the program has two Full Time coaches and seven part-time coaches. The program is unique, in that it is a YMCA sponsored program, but has developed relationships with non-Y facilities to provide adult aquatic fitness programs for the Indianapolis community. The program boasts success at all levels, six YMCA National Championships, 32 National USMS Swimming Champions, 70 Swimmer’s ranked in USMS “Top Ten”, 12 USMS Open Water National Champions, 8 Hawaii Ironman Triathletes, 4 USTA Mid-West Club Championships, and 2002 USMS 1 Hour Swim 2nd place 675,000 yards. In addition to his coaching, Mel was past president of United States Masters Swimming, recently named “Coach of the Year” for 2001, and co-authored a book with Dave Tanner “Swimming Past 50”. He has written many articles for SWIM magazine, most recently on “How To Make Masters Fun!” Goldstein also competes himself, was on legendary coach “Doc” Councilman’s first team at Indiana University, and is consistently ranked in the USMS “Top Ten” in his age group.
