Mr. Barry Bixler
|
Barry Bixler, a long-time
swim dad, resides in Chandler, Arizona, where as a Principal Engineer for
the Honeywell Corporation, he is a leader in the development of jet
engines. He has 30 years of
engineering experience, specializing is applied mechanics. Barry’s
combination of swimming knowledge and fluid dynamics expertise has given
him a unique viewpoint that has been eye-opening to many in the swimming
community. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Swimming Research, and will be a
contributing author to the next IOC book on swimming. One of his
“hobbies” is to apply engineering techniques used by mainstream
aerospace engineers in industry to questions involving the fluid dynamics
of swimming. In partnership with Scott Riewald at USA Swimming, he has
been applying Computational Fluid Dynamics (a technique used in the
aerospace industry) to analyze the flow around a swimmer’s arm and hand.
This presentation presents the results from their latest study -
the assessment of how arm and hand acceleration and deceleration affect
the propulsion generated by a swimmer. |
