about ASCA

The CAM program is designed to prepare the aquatic professional for the duties of managing the total aquatic program for a public or private agency.

This national registry and educational program was introduced in October 1992 by Dr. Don VanRossen and Dr. Robert Clayton. Programs have been sponsored by chapters of the American Red Cross, Parks & Recreation Societies, CNCA, U.S. Swimming and the American Swimming Coaches Association.

WHY YOU NEED THIS CERTIFICATION
Certified Aquatic Manager certification is the system developed over many years that assures the public and sponsoring agencies that a professional training and a standard of testing has been achieved. The Certified Aquatic Manager is an ASCA sponsored program and is offered to help the coach be more marketable, to expand your career, and continue your professional advancement.

HOME STUDY / JOB SITE COURSE MATERIALS
Upon registration for the home study course Coaches will receive The Aquatic Manager’s Handbook and The Aquatic Manager’s Job Site Survey Guide. The key topics in the Handbook include:

Facility Design and Use

Programs and Scheduling

Lifeguards and Risk Management

Finances and Budget Controls

Public Safety Education

Marketing and Public Safety

Maintenance Parameters and Systems

Operational Codes and Standards

Staffing and Training

Office Management

Reports and Records

Management Forms

The Job Site Survey Guide gives the CAM student an instructive tool for completing a comprehensive inventory of their own facility and programs.

COURSE FORMAT AND SCHEDULE
Upon registration the coach will also receive 5 assignments. These assignments will require the completion of sections of the Job Site Survey and selected readings from the Aquatic Manager’s Handbook. It is estimated that the complete Job Site Survey will take about 25 hours to complete plus research time. Coaches may work at their own pace but we anticipate that most coaches will complete the entire course in five to eight weeks.

SUPPORT, MENTORING
As part of the registration fee, CAM candidates will receive four support phone calls during the completion of the course. Additionally, candidates are encouraged to call the course authors at any time for assistance.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
The candidate must be an experienced aquatic professional, a member of ASCA, and current in two nationally recognized certifications: for example ARC Coaches Safety Training, ASCA Level 2, ARC LG, or WSI, SwimAmerica Program Director or Site Supervisor.

CAM CERTIFICATION
Candidate registry as a Certified Aquatic Manager follows successful completion of certification standards which include (1) complete written assignments; (2) evidence of two current nationally recognized aquatic certifications; (3) submission of a brief resume to complete personal file. A National Registry will be available to support candidate job applications and references. Completion is also worth 20 ASCA Certification units.

COURSE FEES AND REGISTRATION
The fee for the text, survey guide, materials, phone assistance, and national registry and certificate is $295 for ASCA members.
