Application and Interview Tips (in no particular order)

Tip 1.  Coaches, you do write a cover letter to send along with your resume -- right?  And you craft the cover letter to be specific to the job you are applying for -- correct?  Here's a good article in the Wall Street Journal about cover letters.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704187204575101940175633532.html

Tip Number 2:  Attempts at humor and sarcasm are very dangerous in the job application adventure and I recommend you avoid them.  If you are a natural humor creating personality then keep it bottled up during the interview process.  If the interviewer opens the door with his/her humor be very careful in how you respond.  Better to smile politely then to try to add to.  I have read that crafty interviewers will actually attempt to lure candidates into saying something sarcastic and a person's use of sarcasm often displays a certain bias.  "Gottcha!"  If you are not a naturally humor generating person then do not try to be in writing or in conversation.  Instead, be yourself.

Tip Number 3:  (Which is the same as Tip 1, but needs repeating.)  ASCA is in the process of looking for an administrative assistant.  We placed an ad in Career Builder which clearly stated who we are and asked applicants to submit a cover letter and resume.  We received 89 replies in the first three days.  Only 10 of the replies included a cover letter and only one of the 10 took the time to write a non-generic cover letter specific to the job we are offering.  Do you know what is going to happen to the 79 resumes without a cover letter?  They are going in the trash because the candidate couldn't follow instructions and didn't take the time to learn something about ASCA.  Follow directions.  Learn about the program.  Send a custom cover letter.

Tip Number 4.  Be well prepared for a telephone interview.  Telephone Interview Tips -- 2 page PDF file.

Important Note About The Position Evaluation Rating System

The scores posted are based upon information employers supply via a questionnaire called The Position Evaluation. The Position Evaluation asks for information on Area Demographics, Program Characteristics such as team numbers and pool availability, Coaches Compensation and Benefits, Club and Coach Stability, and Coaches Authority and Responsibility. The Position Evaluation is a GUIDE, nothing more. It is the responsibility of the coach to explore in depth each item in the Position Evaluation.

ASCA Members may email Guy Edson at gedson@swimmingcoach.org  to receive the position evaluation.

Coaches should then review the Position evaluation with the club during the interview process.  You can download a Position Evaluation form and survey here.
