Murray Stephens

Murray Stephens

Murray Stephens has been the Head Coach of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club for 35 years. Murray and his staff have made NBAC the most prestigious Age Group and USA Olympic Development club in modern USA Swimming history. In the last two decades, NBAC leads USA Club programs in Olympic Gold medals, World and USA LC records while retaining dominance in National Age Group record performance. NBAC has as its mission the highest
achievement for each individual swimmer.

Murray is equally proud of its many coaches whose coaching excellence at NBAC has earned them plaudits at NBAC and elsewhere. Murray has served as mentor and coaching partner for age group and senior coaches who are household names in the coaching profession, most notably recently are Bob Bowman, two time Coach of the Year and current coaching marvel Paul Yetter.

While developing hundreds of young swimmers to USA Swimming National Rankings, Murray also has earned the American Swimming Coaches Gold Award of Excellence for placing National finalists for twenty years. In 1984, Murray coached Theresa Andrews who won two Gold medals at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

In 1991 Murray was Anita Nall’s coach when she set 2 American Records in the 200 Breaststroke in Seattle followed the next year by 2 World Records at the 1992 Olympic Trials. Anita went on to earn Gold, Silver, and Bronze in the Barcelona Olympics. In 1996,
Murray’s swimmers Whitney Metzler and Beth Botsford swam in the Atlanta Olympics. Beth earned a Gold medal in the 100 Back and a Relay Gold. In the fall of 1996, Murray was named United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year for Swimming as well as ASCA Coach of the Year.

As a swimming contributor, Murray has served in numerous administrative capacities. Most notably as a Vice President for both ASCA and for USA Swimming. Currently Murray chairs two Task Forces for USA Swimming.

Professionally, Murray constructed, owns, and operates Meadowbrook Aquatic Center in Baltimore, consisting of two 50 meter pools. At Meadowbrook, the North Baltimore Aquatic Club Swim School teaches over 3000 children to swim while conducting stroke clinics as well as operating a 200 member summer swim team.

Murray is married to Patricia Reilly Stephens. They have four children, Reilly, Kerry, Jes, and Henry.
