Poolside Props for Athletes Who Grin and Bear It
"Coach Counsilman makes elaborate use of doodads and props,
such as this mirror which helps Johnny Collins
perfect his turns. His conditioning devices, he says, get better
results than the famous action exercise systems developed by the
Royal Canadian Air Force which he claims can do permanent damage
to the lower back. The Isogym device patented by Counsilman has
been installed in atomic submarines by the U.S. Navy, and he has
a government grant to develop a conditioning program for the Air
Force. Counsilman has studied physiology, physics and chemistry,
and applies his knowledge to his training program. For example,
he takes urine and blood specimens from swimmers to observe the
chemical reactions to stress. In the pool he goads his athletes
to build endurance by pushing themselves into an agony of fatigue
in 1,500-yard workouts. 'But we never let the program run longer
than 12 weeks,' he says. 'The body is just like the mind - too much
stress and it will fall apart.' Despite all their suffering, the
swimmers adore their painstaking and pains-giving coach. When they
feel a need for revenge they take it by tossing him into the pool
fully clothed. And when Counsilman appears bareheaded at poolside,
someone is sure to demand that he go get his hat, to shut off the
light reflected by his bald pate."

Collins' Historic Athletes |
Rick
Carey
"Rick put my program on the map. His aggressive, fiery, no nonsense
style of swimming put him on a meteoric rise to the top. His black
cap seemed to sum up his personality. The backstroker of the decade
(the 80's), not satisfied with winning, he was always looking
for more."

| "It
turns out I have coached 5 Division I NCAA champions, and 5 World Champions,
and many New York State Champions and Region I Champions back in the
early days and "Glory Days" when I faced off in coaching against
the prowess of Bernal, Leonard, Warner, McElroy and Wood... those were
the fun times when beating someone meant something... and winning was
everything." - John Collins |
