IAC Swimmers on TV Programs

If you have recently deserted your TV set for the back terrace, you may have missed some educational programs with IAC participants.

Jim Clark, our busy swim coach, in his various capacities as chairman of Water Safety for Red Cross, swimming counselor for Boy Scouts and consultant for the Indianapolis Park Department swimming program, appeared on three different TV programs. In early June, Ruth Ann Abbett and Betsy Turner demonstrated dry land life saving, with Jim’s commentaries.

On June 23, our IACers appeared on the first live water show telecast by WFBM-TV – direct from Meridian Hills Country Club. This 30-minute program on Water Safety, sponsored by the Safety Council, gave a realistic presentation, with our expert swimmers exemplifying their excellent training. Jim Clark gave explanations as Jimmy O’Neal and John Earp, seven years old, Fran McAree, Judy Roberts and the Wally Colbaths, junior and senior, demonstrated.

Our progressive Park Department is ever alert to furthering the recreational facilities and program for the City parks. Each summer there is renewed effort to offer instruction for swimming at all six city pools. Jim Clark was asked to train the instructors and direct the competitive programs for the City pools supervised by the Park Department.

On July 29, three of our Mid-west champions, Gail Moll, Sharon Feeney and Portia Hancock, appeared in nylon racing suits on TV with Jim and demonstrated the different strokes, which will be taught at the pools, to viewers at home.
