Males in America
Date: March 13, 2000

The following a "Leonard summary" of twelve articles sent by Colonel Block, Major General Neuberger and others. President Hogan told me to "cut down the office paper budget", so I am summarizing instead of copying verbatim. Despite the humorous tone, its a very serious problem.

19 of 19 high school sports participation down for males.

Football "threatened" in 9 states.

Male high school swimmers numbers down absolutely (not just by percentage) by 28,000 in 4 years.

16% fewer men taking SAT's over past 9 years.

Only 38% of matriculating college classes in 1999 were male. 38%. 38%. 38%........

"Extreme Sports" up in popularity 73 % in 90's." (measured how? I don't know, article doesn't say.)

Males or parents of males purchase 77% of all video games.

Conclusions:
American males don't want to be measured these days, and cheap thrills are the only kind they are growing up knowing about. Swimming will be (is?) bucking the tide to add male swimmers.

Question: Where the heck are the 62% of American males who are NOT going to college, going?????

Question Number Two: If women make up 2/3 of college students, and Title IX continues to be interpreted as at present?????? Then?????

Warning lights need to be exploding, and an action plan developed.

Thanks for your time. JL
