Book Review:
Physiology of Sport and Exercise

CHAMPAIGN, IL-The first edition of Physiology of Sport and Exercise was used by more than 50,000 physiology students, recommended by educators as an ideal tool for helping students understand this complex subject area, and lauded in reviews for its usefulness as a text for educators and students and as a reference for professionals. Authors Jack Wilmore and David Costill have improved upon this standard with Physiology of Sport and Exercise (Second Edition), new from Human Kinetics. This edition includes more learning features geared to aid students’ understanding, as well as supplementary materials for use in graduate or undergraduate exercise physiology classrooms.

Drs. Wilmore and Costill, two of the field’s most respected scholars with more than 70 combined years of experience, have thoroughly revised this popular text to make learning the concepts even easier for students. The book includes color-coded chapters, chapter outlines, key terms and points, study questions, a glossary, and an index.

Course adoptions of Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Second Edition include several electronic products to further assist professors and students. These include an electronic instructor guide new to this edition, a revised and improved test bank, and an expanded graphics package for PowerPoint or slide presentations. In addition, instructors will be able to retrieve some of the course’s ancillary materials directly from the World Wide Web.

Leaders in the field agree that Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Second Edition is one of the top texts in the subject area. "In 25 years of teaching undergraduate Exercise Physiology using various texts, I had finally settled on the prior edition. Now with the more up-to-date facts and references, I will continue to use this book," says Gene Adams, PhD, professor at California State University, Fullerton.

"Using concise and clearly written expositions, the authors describe the numerous concepts and paradigms that are at the basis of our current understanding of exercise physiology," says Claude Bouchard, PhD, FACSM, professor of kinesiology at Laval University.

Greg Dykstra, PhD, lecturer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, calls Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Second Edition "an excellent text for undergraduates, providing a well referenced source encompassing the breadth of Exercise Physiology. This is a well-organized text and, with excellent illustrations and graphs, easy to use."
