Dear Coach, This winter, the swim coach profession lost one of its most revered figures with the passing of James "Doc" Counsilman. The American Swimming Coaches Association Board of Directors has resolved to commemorate Doc permanently, by providing a special lecture at each year World Clinic and designating it the "Counsilman Memorial Lecture Series." This lecture will provide our annual attendees with a speaker whom we would not otherwise be able to employ, and who will likely come from "outside" the coaching profession. In this way, we hope to honor Doc's concept that our best learning comes from outside our own immediate environment. A Counsilman Memorial Lecture Series Committee has been selected, and those individuals are: Coach Bob Groseth, Coach Jack Pettinger, FINA Vice President Mr. Dale Neuburger, and Dr. Joel Stager. Bob and Jack were former assistants of Doc's who worked closely with him throughout his life, Dale and Joel both spent considerable time working with Doc and in Joel's case, runs the aquatic research center at Indiana University named in honor of Doc. Those four individuals will administer the fund that will provide financial resources for Counsilman Memorial Lecture Series. They will also be responsible for the annual selection of the honoree. Each year prior to the lecture, a short history of Doc's contributions will be presented, to keep his name and contributions to swimming uppermost in the history of our profession. To this end, we ask you for your financial donation to the Counsilman Memorial Lecture Series Fund as a means to honor all that Doc meant to us.
